About Skipton & The Dales

Skipton, often referred to as the ‘Gateway to the Dales,’ is a picturesque town nestled in North Yorkshire. Recently named as one of the UK’s top 10 happiest places to live, Skipton offers the perfect blend between a vibrant market town and easy access to the natural beauty of the Yorkshire Dales. With its distinct identity, rich history, and community at its core, it is easy to see why so many people are proud to call Skipton their home. Its wealth of amenities includes excellent schools, sports and leisure facilities, and great transport links to large cities, including direct trains to both Leeds and Bradford. A variety of independent shops, traditional pubs, and local cafes alongside well-known brands populate The High Street which bustles under the shadow of the iconic Skipton Castle, a 12th Century fortress that offers visitors a glimpse into the past as one of the most well-preserved medieval castles in England. Skipton is also home to one of the oldest markets, originally chartered in 1204 for the trade of wool and sheep. Today, those markets still grace the cobbled streets of Skipton four days a week, offering a variety of homegrown produce, crafts, antiques, and much more. Nearby attractions include the Bolton Abbey Estate with its ancient ruins and scenic walks, as well as the famous Malham Cove, a spectacular natural amphitheatre carved from limestone. Or, if water is more your thing, visit the Leeds and Liverpool canals. Hop onto one of Skipton's beautiful barges and explore the town by boat. Whether you are drawn to its rich heritage and scenic surroundings or you’re looking for that sense of belonging, Skipton offers a fantastic quality of life in a beautiful and well-connected location.

The Yorkshire Dales is a stunning national park, a place so beautiful that even the sheep pause to take it in. Renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, charming villages, and rich cultural heritage, it’s probably best known for being home to some of the finest walking and cycling trails the country has to offer, including a large section of the Pennine Way as well as the Yorkshire Three Peaks. Ingleborough, Whernsid,e and Pen-y-Ghent, three towering mountains that set the stage for a test of endurance attempted by over 200,000 people a year. Having completed this challenge myself, I can truly say the views from each summit are nothing short of spectacular. Whether a seasoned climber or casual walker, I would highly recommend paying these beautiful peaks a visit. The Dales is also the beloved setting for the famous James Herriot books. The vet’s tales, set in the fictional village of Darrowby, are inspired by the real-life beauty of this wonderful region. Grassington, a quaint little village in the heart of the Dales, became world famous when it was chosen as the filming location for the TV series All Creatures Great and Small. The series brought the heartwarming tales of the Yorkshire vet and his animal patients to life, with Grassington standing in for the fictional village of Darrowby. The cobbled streets, stone cottages and lush green hills made it the perfect backdrop for the charming 1930s setting where visitors can still walk the same lanes where Herriot’s adventures unfolded. The Dales are also home to some of the most fascinating and accessible caves in the UK, offering a mix of natural beauty, historical significance and exciting exploration opportunities. If, however, you prefer to be above ground, there’s an abundance of activities waiting to be discovered, such as the Ingleton Waterfall Trail, a famous walk through woodland and cascading waterfalls, Gordale Scar, a deep limestone gorge, as well as the spectacular Ribblehead Viaduct, which hosts the historic engineering feat that is the Settle-Carlisle Railway— just to name a few.

Whether you choose one of the busier towns or quaint country villages, living in the Yorkshire Dales offers a unique blend of natural beauty, tranquillity, and community. With its stunning landscapes, charming stone settlements, and endless outdoor opportunities, it’s an ideal place for those who appreciate nature and a slower pace of life. The Dales are steeped in history, culture, and local traditions, and the strong sense of community makes it a welcoming environment for families and individuals alike. Excellent local amenities combined with easy access to nearby towns and cities, from Kendal to Harrogate, make the Dales the perfect balance of peaceful countryside living and convenient connectivity. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or someone seeking a peaceful retreat, the Yorkshire Dales offers a fulfilling and beautiful place to call home. So come and join the flock as EweMove to the Dales!
